Initially a troubled enterprise, the successful expedition is considered to be among the highest achievements in the history of Swedish science. Nils Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld by Axel Jungstedt 1902 Nordenskjold travelled to London where he met William Spiers Bruce the leader of the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition that was shortly to leave. Nordenskjold and Bruce promised to rescue each other should it be required as they were to be within a few hundred miles of each other. The expedition established that Trinity Peninsula and Danco Land were part of a single peninsula, and the ship sailed between the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula and Joinville Island through a passage that Nordenskjöld named Antarctic Strait (now Antarctic Sound), after his vessel.
